DataPortability.org … great initiative without a logo

You may remember the initiative for a better Internet experience. Couple a months ago, major companies adopted the idea and became part of the so called Data Portability. The main idea was combining open source technologies into a cleaner and user oriented web or something like that.

Well the idea is good, but the approach is kinda bad. Instead of transforming the idea into a PR movement – they could have started an open suggestion session. What do I mean by PR movement? In order to gain more credibility big companies adopted the idea only by name.

Also the concept is pretty strange: gather open source technologies under Creative Commons with Attribution license. How does this work ? Basically, you receive credit for the work of others. Don’t get me wrong, I like the thing but I do not like the approach.

The only thing half-done right was the logo. They organized a contest with relative good prizes for the logo. This was necessary because the initial logo was to close to Red Hat’s Fedora logo. So, they made the contest, they picked the logo (a bad one) and guess what … new issues. What issues?
Well, it seems that France has some IT companies as well and guess what – the winner’s logo and the French logo were similar in shape.

Here you can check the both versions and decide for yourself:
